Stéphane Braunschweig wished to associate four artists to his artistic project as director of the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe: Sylvain Creuzevault, Caroline Guiela Nguyen, Christiane Jatahy and Alexander Zeldin.
Sylvain Creuzevault
Sylvain Creuzevault began directing in 2003 with the d'ores et déjà group, of which he is co-founder. He created Brecht's Baal as part of the Festival d'Automne à Paris in 2006 (at the Ateliers Berthier de l'Odéon), then staged Le Père tralalère at the Théâtre Studio d'Alfortville in 2007, and Notre terreur at La Colline in 2009 - two shows in which improvisation plays a large part.
After working in Germany, in 2014 Sylvain Creuzevault directed Le Capital et son Singe, a play about Marx, which he returned to in 2018 with Banquet Capital, and in 2016 Angelus Novus AntiFaust. That same year, he set up his company Le Singe in Eymoutiers in the Limousin region.
Associate artist at the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe since 2016, he is devoting a cycle to Dostoyevsky with Les Démons in 2018, Le Grand Inquisiteur in 2020 and Les Frères Karamazov in 2021. That same year, he founded the 'Harlequin Councils, Party School', whose work in actor training is based on the novel The Aesthetics of Resistance by Peter Weiss.
Caroline Guiela Nguyen
Author, director and producer Caroline Guiela Nguyen studied at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg before founding Les Hommes Approximatifs in 2009. This was followed by Se souvenir de Violetta (2011), Ses Mains, Le Bal d'Emma (2012), Elle brûle (2013), Le Chagrin (2015), Mon grand amour (2016) and SAIGON (2017). In 2016, with Alexandre Plank and Antoine Richard, she created a radio play, Le Chagrin (Julie et Vincent) for France Culture as part of "Radiodrama".
At the same time, Les Hommes Approximatifs and the Louis Brouillard company have been working with the Maison Centrale d'Arles and Jean Ruimi, creating Désordre d'un futur passé (2016) and Marius (2017). SAIGON (71st Festival d'Avignon, and presented at the Ateliers Berthier of the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe in January 2018 and revived in June 2019) toured for three years in some fifteen countries. It won Caroline Guiela Nguyen, among other awards, the Prix nouveau talent from the SACD, as well as the Prix Georges Lerminier from the Syndicat de la critique (best show created in the French provinces). Begun in 2019, the Fraternité cycle currently comprises three projects: Les Engloutis (a film shot at the Maison centrale in Arles and co-produced by Les Films du Worso); FRATERNITÉ, Conte fantastique (Festival d'Avignon 2021); L'Enfance, la Nuit (Schaubühne, 2022). Caroline Guiela Nguyen is currently associate artist at the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, the Schaubühne in Berlin and the Théâtre national de Bretagne.
Christiane Jatahy
Christiane Jatahy was born in Rio de Janeiro. Her work combines the resources of theatre and film, exploring contemporary methods of communication and the different types of audience participation. In 2004, she founded Companhia Vértice and began work on a trilogy in which she uses documentary material to combine personal history with broader political perspectives. Jatahy's reputation quickly spread beyond Brazil's borders. Since 2011, she has been exploring a different aesthetic path: the team now takes a fictional story and opens it up to the reality of a contemporary situation. In France, she made a name for herself with Julia, What if they went to Moscow and A Floresta que anda (created in 2012, 2014 and 2016). After La Règle du jeu, based on Jean Renoir (Comédie-Française, 2016), she wrote and directed a diptych inspired by Homer: Ithaque (Notre Odyssée 1) in 2018, and Le Présent qui déborde (presented at the Avignon Festival in 2019), performed at the Ateliers Berthier and the Centquatre, before going on international tour. Entre chien et loup, inspired by Lars Von Trier's film Dogville, premiered at the Avignon Festival in 2021.
Christiane Jatahy is an associate artist at the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, the Centquatre-Paris, the Schauspielhaus - Zürich, ArtsEmerson - Boston and the Piccolo Teatro - Milan; she has just been awarded the Golden Lion 2022 at the Venice Biennale.
At the Odéon, Christiane Jatahy presented :
– A Floresta que anda, 2016
– Ithaque (Notre Odyssée 1) inspired by Homère, 2018
– Le Présent qui déborde based on Homère, 2019
– Entre Chien et loup based on Dogville by Lars Von Trier, 2022
Alexander Zeldin
Born in London in 1985, Alexander Zeldin is an English playwright and director who has presented shows in Russia, South Korea and the Middle East, and at the Naples Festival, before working on his own texts as part of his teaching at East 15 Acting School (2011-2014). He has worked as assistant director for Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne. His critically acclaimed Beyond Caring tells the story of several night workers who meet in an industrial butcher's shop.
Premiered at Hackney's Yard Theatre in 2014, the play was revived at the National Theatre in 2015. In the same year, Zeldin received the Quercus Trust Award and became an Associate Artist at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Following a tour of Beyond Caring, Zeldin is giving a new American version. Produced by Lookingglass Theater in collaboration with David Schwimmer's company Dark Harbour Stories, it was presented in Chicago in 2017. In 2016, Love was presented at the National Theatre, before being revived at Birmingham Rep and leaving in 2018 for a European tour (Ateliers Berthier, 2018) which continued in 2020-2021 (organised by Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe). The BBC and Cuba Pictures have produced a film version. Zeldin is an Associate Artist of the National Theatre in London, and the recipient of the Foundation for the Arts 25th Anniversary Award in 2018. His triptych of Inequalities was completed in 2019 with Faith, Hope and Charity (Odéon, 2021).
At the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, he presented Love in November 2018 and Faith, Hope and Charity in June 2021 at the Ateliers Berthier. He will create his first play in French, Une mort dans la famille in 2022.
