Meine faire Dame. Ein Sprachlabor
December 11th-16th 2012
piano, organ Bendix Dethleffsen and Mihaï Grigoriu
Why is this bouquet of hydrangeas sitting on the doorstep of Professor Zoltan Karpathy’ house? And stuck amongst the flowers, a little note where it is written: “You have until midnight in order to solve the following riddle, or I will not reply for my acts (…)” Marthaler is the sweet and sour high priest of a certain form of contemporary banality, a paradoxical referee of elegance who understands, like no one else, what is out of style right at that poetico-burlesque moment when it hasn’t yet become vintage. Welcome to the laboratory where language stutters, where meaning and syntax trip each other up – and where these same voices, which were embarrassed or mute just seconds before, sing covers of hits with impeccable mastery. Whether it be excerpts from My Fair Lady or from the Enchanted Flute, from Wham! or from Bryan Adams, every piece is a musical and spiritual tour de force.
